Yikes... It has been far too long since I have released a blog!
What a fast summer. School is starting soon and the humidity is thicker than soup. Anyways....
Since school is beginning in just a few short weeks, I thought I would do this one for the parents.
Stick with me if this is your morning.
'Time to wake up the kids for school/daycare/the day. First things first, check the pull-up. Find out they wet the bed. Add ten minutes to the morning routine, again.'
It seemed normal when they were younger but now they are going to school. Should this have happened for the nth time in a row?
You have gone the standard route already. Setting alarms, no drinks before bed etc, etc.
Nothing has changed.
What is there to do now except wait it out until they finally grow out of it?
First of all, let's talk about NORMAL. Bed-wetting is part of the development and growth of your child.
It is not uncommon for children to continue on with letting it all out during sleep up to the age of 5 or 6.
Why would it continue beyond that?
If you have read any of my other posts, you may know what is coming.
If you haven't, here is a quick synopsis:
Your child's body is dependent on function and adaptability to its environment.
It does this through the Nervous System.
Our Nervous System controls everything, even when we are sleeping.
Perceiving, Coordinating, keeping everything calm and stable by sending messages from the body to the brain and then from the brain to the body.
We run into issues when these messages becomes interfered with.
In a study looking at what happens to our nerve roots under stress, 6% stretch of our nerves led to a 70% decrease in the ability to create an action potential. (the signals our bodies use to communicate)
That means, when our kids are sleeping our brain is sending down a message to our bladder (and urinary system) to hold tight until morning. When that message doesn't get through, we see a wet pull-up or sheets in the morning.
The stretch I am talking about arises from what is called 'dyskinesia' in our spine or vertebrae. Dyskinesia is a loss of normal position and range of motion in a vertebrae resulting in physiological changes like inflammation which leads ultimately to stretch, pressure, and dysfunction within our nerves.
Leading to... You guessed it, bed-wetting.
So what can be done short of washing sheets each day and buying up the entire shelf of night time diapers?

As a Chiropractor, I have a very real solution to some big issues.
I am a very low pressure person and it flows into my business.
But what I am realizing, is that I have a moral obligation to share other options people may not have heard of before.
