I always get asked, "do you adjust kids?"
And my answer is always a resounding YES!
Well here are a few reasons:
So the next question is how do I know my child needs to be adjusted?
For this, we go all the way back to the beginning...
ANY mother can recount the traumas associated with the birthing process.
That is no secret.
But let's look at what studies show happens to the little one during this process as well.
One study looked at birth trauma occurrence in babies and found interesting stats:
So why is this important? Let's use an analogy:
When I was little I used to LOVE building towers with dominoes.
I know I'm not alone in this.
The goal of course was always to see how tall I could get the stacks before the tower fell.
I distinctively remember playing this little game on the floor at my great-grandmas house, because she had fluffy carpet. Now, fluffy carpet didn't make a great foundation for my towers, but being young and inexperienced, I tried anyways. They would never get too high until they crumbled. Then, I figured out what I needed was to create a firm foundation to start the bottom on. After that I could use up all of the dominoes in the box.
And it was awesome!
When we let our children grow up without addressing any of the trauma they had during the birthing process, learning how to walk, falling off of a bicycle, we let them grow up with a foundation built on carpet.
With a foundation of limited potential!
Why does that matter?
A compromised foundation leads to a compromised body.
Instead of a crumbling tower however, they are faced with secondary conditions of the body such as:
Now Earlier I mentioned kids respond really well to chiropractic and here is what I mean:
That is why at Restore, we have chosen to focus on RESTORING foundation all the way from the youngest of kids to the oldest of adults. Addressing the ROOT cause instead of the symptom.
As the founder of Chiropractic once said:
"There is a vast difference between treating effects and adjusting the cause."
- D.D. Palmer
Nothing feels as great as being able to use all of the dominoes in the box!
Yours in Health,
I have had plenty of conversations with people about stress.
And, they usually go like this...
Me: "The exams I do analyze how much stress we are dealing with and how our body deals with it."
Friendly Person "Haha, Well I think I would break your machine! I have too much for it to measure!"
(Almost) Every. Single. Time.
Which is why I am releasing a workshop on stress later this week.
I know, it's a joke. But I get a little worried sometimes because it is becoming an extremely common joke.
Our health, your health, is not supposed to be a joke.
I don't mind hearing that joke over and over.
What I do mind is getting the impression that nothing can be done about it.
Because that is not true.
Stress is a good thing, until too much of a good thing becomes a very, very bad thing.
Excessive stress keeps hormones like cortisol in our system for long periods of time. Here is an excerpt talking about what happens with excessive cortisol:
“Sustained high cortisol levels destroy healthy muscle and bone, slow down healing and normal cell regeneration, co-opt biochemicals needed to make other vital hormones, impair digestion, metabolism and mental function, interfere with healthy endocrine function; and weaken your immune system.”
Chronic stress can lead to serious issues. And this is only one example.
Which is why it is always a good idea to deal with it as soon as possible.
How to we find it?
How do we fix it?
How does it get better?
These are answers that will be found in our "Stressed" workshop.
So stay tuned as we roll out information that you shouldn't miss.
Yours in Health,
Yikes... It has been far too long since I have released a blog!
What a fast summer. School is starting soon and the humidity is thicker than soup. Anyways....
Since school is beginning in just a few short weeks, I thought I would do this one for the parents.
Stick with me if this is your morning.
'Time to wake up the kids for school/daycare/the day. First things first, check the pull-up. Find out they wet the bed. Add ten minutes to the morning routine, again.'
It seemed normal when they were younger but now they are going to school. Should this have happened for the nth time in a row?
You have gone the standard route already. Setting alarms, no drinks before bed etc, etc.
Nothing has changed.
What is there to do now except wait it out until they finally grow out of it?
First of all, let's talk about NORMAL. Bed-wetting is part of the development and growth of your child.
It is not uncommon for children to continue on with letting it all out during sleep up to the age of 5 or 6.
Why would it continue beyond that?
If you have read any of my other posts, you may know what is coming.
If you haven't, here is a quick synopsis:
Your child's body is dependent on function and adaptability to its environment.
It does this through the Nervous System.
Our Nervous System controls everything, even when we are sleeping.
Perceiving, Coordinating, keeping everything calm and stable by sending messages from the body to the brain and then from the brain to the body.
We run into issues when these messages becomes interfered with.
In a study looking at what happens to our nerve roots under stress, 6% stretch of our nerves led to a 70% decrease in the ability to create an action potential. (the signals our bodies use to communicate)
That means, when our kids are sleeping our brain is sending down a message to our bladder (and urinary system) to hold tight until morning. When that message doesn't get through, we see a wet pull-up or sheets in the morning.
The stretch I am talking about arises from what is called 'dyskinesia' in our spine or vertebrae. Dyskinesia is a loss of normal position and range of motion in a vertebrae resulting in physiological changes like inflammation which leads ultimately to stretch, pressure, and dysfunction within our nerves.
Leading to... You guessed it, bed-wetting.
So what can be done short of washing sheets each day and buying up the entire shelf of night time diapers?
See a chiro who focuses on two things:
Luckily you are already on the page of a Chiro that does both. (crazy enough)
Thus ends the science part
begins my last little soapbox section:
I attended a seminar a few weekends ago.
Here is a summery of something huge I learned:
As a Chiropractor, I have a very real solution to some big issues.
I am a very low pressure person and it flows into my business.
But what I am realizing, is that I have a moral obligation to share other options people may not have heard of before.
So, this is one of my moral obligatory posts.
My job is done.
Now you have a choice. You can take my words, do a little research on your own (which I suggest) and take action by setting up a time to find out more.
Think about this post the next time you are out getting a refill on your next set of pull-ups.
Either way, we'll be here, ready to serve.
Yours in Health,
We are now a week away from our NeuroStorm talk.
So, if you are with the many other folks who are intrigued but still don't know enough to come, allow me to take a chance and explain what exactly this workshop is designed for.
The NeuroStorm is a culmination of months worth of research on human physiology, case studies, and natural approaches for kiddos with Neurodevelopmental Disorders.
The two most common of the two being ADHD and Autism.
I'd like to dive into the above two disorders for a few lines so bear with me.
Over the last few years, there has been an unprecedented rise in both rates of Autism and ADHD.
Currently, 1 in 59 children born are found somewhere on the Autism spectrum and over 6.4 million kiddos live with the diagnosis of ADHD.
Kids have more stress put on their bodies than ever before.
Chemical Stress, Physical Stress, Emotional Stress.
From the foods we eat to learning how to walk.
Specific Examples? Come to the workshop.
This stress forces a child's body to respond by initiating their sympathetic nervous system also known as the "fight or flight" response. And while a little stress can be a good thing, a LOT of stress can be a VERY BAD THING.
Long term, high amounts of stress can lead to an excess of energy or a
shut down of many higher functioning systems like
communication and social skills.
One of the quotes you will see if you come to the workshop is:
"You can't be in protection and growth at the same time"
-Dr. Bruce Lipton
This extreme increase in diagnosis of ASD, ADHD, SPD, Tic disorders, etc.
is because kids are stuck trying to protect themselves from stress instead of growing and developing like they are supposed to!
So, how do we help? I won't do it alone. Which is why this workshop is designed not only to be educational, but to empower parents and kiddos so that the cycle stress can be broken and a new cycle of growing, learning, laughing, and playing can begin!
If this held your interest, there is still room to come and join us next Thursday.
There is still much to discuss. I hope to see you there!
For more information, check out our Facebook event on the Restore page!
Yours in Health,
Just last weekend I went to an event where I got to have a booth and share the benefits of Restoration Chiropractic Care.
It was an event for an animal shelter so not only was my beautiful wife sitting next to me, but I also got to show off my furry little sidekick the whole time.
As we were packing up to leave I grabbed the final few items from our space and started walking towards the door before turning and checking one last time to see if anything was forgotten.
I noticed a piece of trash at our space and didn't want to be a slob so I ran back to grab it quick.
When I walked back, I heard one of the vendors speaking and it made my ears perk up.
"That was a chiropractor next to us. And the whole time I was sitting there like..." *stands up straight*, *relaxes*, *stands up straight*, *relaxes*
I get it... As soon as my profession is made known to a new group of people, they all suddenly grow three inches..
So let me save you a little exercise and back stretching.
Posture is important. Structure is vital.
Posture changes with however we are sitting, standing, moving, etc.
Long term poor posture leads to NeuroSpinal Shift. I.E. A change in STRUCTURE that won't resolve with a simple, straightening up.
You don't need to prove to me that your posture is flawless because ANYONE can change posture. It is the FEW that can influence structure.
What does this mean?
Poor posture, trauma, stress, all lead to Shift. Shift that causes DYSFUNCTION in the nerves that exit through the spinal column.
That is why just a small but significant shift in the spine can lead to MANY different health issues and concerns.
Since this shift is what causes your health concerns, RESTORING that shift is how to SOLVE them.
That is why I have chosen such a specific focus in my practice.
If I can RESTORE that shift, that primary issue, than YOU will function better, resolving those secondary issues.
Here's the important part: Your body was designed to perform perfectly. To function and perform each action necessary for life with ease.
When our spine, our nervous system, goes through a shift, that is when we experience:
In as simple of terms as I can make it:
NO MORE SHIFT, NO MORE STRUCTURAL OR NERVE DYSFUNCTION
BETTER HEALTH AND HEALING!

Yours in Health,
"Serving our neighbors through educating, empowering, and exceptional restorative chiropractic care."
That is the mission statement I created when working towards opening this practice. I wanted it to reflect what I truly care about when it comes to why I do what I do.
So for this blog, I am going to break it down and explain my mission towards service and health.
"Serving our neighbors":
A service mindset has always been my intention throughout all of life, starting with two of the best parents teaching me to always look for ways to serve others.
Not to find how it could benefit me, but because helping people should just be natural.
That is why we utilize the golden rule to its fullest extent.
We treat you how we expect to be treated in other businesses.
Through honesty and transparency, we hope to achieve a level of service that you are excited to share with others.
And our neighbors?
In our office, it is so. much. more. than a doctor-patient relationship.
Obviously, your health is important to us.
it means going beyond how your back feels or what the headache is like. When you have success, tell us about it so we can rejoice with you. When you have stress, we can always lend an ear. Sometimes you just need to get something off your chest. Well, here we are. We love hearing about your vacation, promotion, and family news, and we'll be there when the news is not so great as well.
We take care of our neighbors. (Hello Neighbor)
We know why we do what we do.
We want you understand your health and what you can benefit from.
Research has shown that knowledge helps the healing process so the more you know, the better. How our care can help and how different care can help.
That means even if what you need isn't found in our office, we'll make sure you get where you need to go to help with your biggest health concerns.
You can take charge of your health.
That is one of the biggest takeaways we want you to know coming into our office.
No matter how helpless you feel from trying a-z treatments, we are here to help. Because, Iowa City, we are the first to bring our specific focus to the area. Which means I can guarantee that you still have yet to try everything. And if you haven't tried everything yet but would like to skip that whole process come on in.
It is all about being excited and taking charge, and we'll help you do that.
"Exceptional Restorative Chiropractic Care"
As I've mentioned before, we are the first to utilize our specific focus of NeuroSpinal Restoration within the realm of chiropractic care, in the Iowa City area.
But I don't just want to be the first, I want to be the best.
Not for me, mind you, but for you!
Serving, educating, and empowering.
If I can do those three things perfectly but fail at my craft, you won't get better.
I wouldn't sleep at night knowing someone was receiving sub par care at my office.
Which is why I continuously practice my skills, dive into research, and develop myself so that you get nothing but the best.
I'm about to use a cliche, (which I dislike doing), but now that you know my story, you know I'm not blowing smoke.
"It's about patient centered care"
I'm here for you!
I went to school because of you!
I continuously work on myself because of you!
I am here to Serve, Educate, Empower, because of you!
Yours in Health,
The current recommendations for physical activity is 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity a week.
The average 9-5 desk job clocks in at about 2 minutes a day for those much needed pee breaks.
WE DON"T MOVE ENOUGH.
There I said it. And I'm writing this blog just in time for nice weather to (finally) kick in.
Listen, "if you don't use it, you lose it" is a pretty common expression and holds true with our bodies.
Our joints are specifically made to move our body around. That includes our spines which has over 100 joints associated with it. When we don't move, we begin to build adhesions throughout our spine which can decrease our ranges of motion and lead to NeuroSpinal Shift.
So yes, if you don't use it, you will LOSE it.
Not to mention that it doesn't really even take that much to maintain somewhat of a healthy lifestyle.
You don't have to go sign up for the next marathon or enter the next bodybuilding competition.
You need to spend 2 1/2 hours doing an activity that:
This doesn't mean to the point of exhaustion. Even a slight increase can have MAJOR health benefits.
In a week with 168 hours you need to put forth 1.5% of it towards exercise.
Not too bad.
How can you get started?
If you need someone to help get you started, just know two things:
We are willing to make an investment in you, to take the time to create a healthy lifestyle, and help with whatever goals you may have.
So come to us with questions or concerns, and we'll do whatever we can to assist!
Thanks for reading.

Restore Family Chiropractic
To vaccinate or not to vaccinate, THAT is the Question.
Is it an easy decision? I hope it's not.
Because the more time you spend learning about what's best for your new bundle of joy the better.
(I will share one word of advice a little later on).
ALL I WANT, (and I know I'm not alone) is a healthy generation of kids.
So, if you are looking for a yes or no answer, go to a biased website.
If you want INFORMATION, then keep reading because believe it or not, Vaccines are more than a black and white topic.
Where to begin? Let's start here:
1.) A.S.K. Q.U.E.S.T.I.O.N.S.
Your child is going to be unlike any other child ON THIS EARTH. I can promise you that. And because of that, they will need something different then those in the bassinets on either side.
Do your OWN research and ask health professionals throughout the allopathic/holistic spectrum on thoughts and advice. It will be a lot of work, but you also have the
BIGGEST RESPONSIBILITY ON EARTH:
taking care of and making decisions for a child; Helpless and dependent on loving parents.
2.) Homework didn't end with school
There are plenty of books to read on the topic of vaccines. (and raising a healthy child for that matter.) Let me offer up a few suggestions of where to start:
3.) On the topic of research
Not always, but sometimes, studies and their results can be spun in such a way that the conclusion doesn't match the actual findings. Be careful about referenced studies and if you aren't sure what to make of it, take it to someone who spends time reading research articles for fun (Like me!) that can take the time to explain it.
****If I may make 1 suggestion****:
We have a lot of mandatory vaccines that are given to children just in the first year of life. If you chose to fully vaccinate your child, consider a delayed vaccination schedule. More visits, less vaccines per trip. Kids go through a lot during the first year of life. And if something does occur after a dose (God-forbid) you can make an informed decision about boosters or additional doses.
And finally, My role as a health care provider is to inform on topics such as this in a non-biased, judgement free, and comfortable atmosphere. So that you can make great decisions based on what is best for you!
Having said that,
in order to fully understand what this process looks like in our society, I have read research, looked at statistics and trends, learned from other health care professionals, and even read vaccine health labels. I have developed my own bias (I am human after all) and do have opinions of my own. I will try to stay as informational as possible, but if you want another health care providers opinion, ask in private as I will be keeping my bias off of the world wide web. Thanks.
Yours in Health,
When looking at the electrical conductance of the Nervous System, the information that is carried from the brain to the body and the body to the brain travels at a speed of
That equals 268 mph!
Why in the world is that important?
Because EVERY SINGLE PROCESS that takes place in your body is controlled and coordinated by that thing between your ears.
your brain is the single most bossy organ in your body.
It coordinates your heart, lungs, kidneys, stomach, blood vessels, thyroid, and more to all work together.
The brain always transmits messages to keep our bodies in tiptop shape.
Issue arise when those messages get interrupted.
It's like talking to a friend with a cell phone:
When we have a strong signal, our conversation is easy and our plans to go bowling get made without an issue.
When our signal gets interrupted, we lose some of the words or phrases and our friend ends up at a rodeo instead of knocking down pins.
Small changes make a big difference.
The connection between the brain and the body is found within the spine.
Our spinal cord is the information super highway in order for our brain to lead the way.
We lose a strong signal when our spine shifts and pressure is put upon the nerves creating dysfunction.
By RESTORING the shift and creating stability, we can help decrease that dysfunction so that we have as little interruption to our normal function as possible.
Always go 12o m/s
Get checked for NeuroSpinal Shift.
Yours in health,
I cannot tell a lie, but don't ask my wife if that's true cause she would give you a different story...
No, what I'm specifically referring to is your health.
And how openness and honesty can completely change your health.
What am I talking about?
Wait, wait, wait...
Before I truly begin, I MUST mention: I have full and upstanding respect for the medical providers that utilize care different then my own. Whether it's holistic (person centered) or allopathic (disease centered), healthcare is a tough field to work in.
In fact, I happen to be married to THE BEST NURSE at the University hospitals.
(some may disagree with that ^, but YOU are wrong)
SO... When I say healthcare is in trouble, it's not with malice, but with a hope that a path of recovery can be set forth.
BUT GUESS WHAT? YOU get to be a part of it to!
And here is where the Honesty sets in...
Within our bursting-at-the-seams medical system, things get lost.
"what exactly does my diagnosis mean"
"why was I prescribed this pill"
"why is NOTHING Changing with MY HEALTH STATUS."
Not to anyone's fault except a leaky system where important information falls through the cracks.
YOU HAVE QUESTIONS, believe it or not, your healthcare provider has answers!
Things that make sense to us, are clear as mud to YOU!
There is LITERALLY research that shows the more you as the patient knows, the better the healing process will go. SERIOUSLY.
This is why I place so. much. emphasis. on my recommendation conference. When I get the opportunity to show you the VERY comprehensive exam results revealing negative effects to your health, I ask for questions, and strive for understanding, because my plan is in place for YOU!
***One more thing***
WHEN you ask questions now, if you still aren't getting answers that you NEED, ask others involved with your care. I know for a FACT, nurses can be just as knowledgeable about what you are going through (at least one I know is...)
Still then, if answers don't come, look for other health care professionals that will help.
I know, Dr. Google is quick, but it is great at showing you typicals:
I can't speak on behalf of anyone but myself, BUT, I want to see change happen.
I want to be a part of honest and educated care. So even if you just want to ask a question, stop in and I'll be here to help.
