So I, as I often do, spent some time in what is known as "The Chiropractic Text Book". A book that we analyze very early on in education to lay the foundation of understanding what we as Chiropractors are trying to accomplish within the human frame.
I like to review it from time to time to ensure the strongest foundation possible so that I can always give my best to every. single. person. who walks through my doors.
Recently, I came across a certain section that I wanted to bring to light as I find it to be exceptionally important.
So bear with me because I want to quote some of the book but the rhetoric is fairly out dated with the current lingo so after, I will break it down as best I can!
- Adaptation -
"Adaptation is the movement of an organism (you) or any of its parts (organs, tissues, etc) to use or circumvent 'environmental forces'.
Adaptation is a continuous process - continually varying."
"to use or circumvent environmental forces"
Seems to be a pretty important aspect of our body right??
Adaptation is what separates the human body from the grains of sand on a beach left to the will of the wind and the rain.
No Adaptation = No Life
If we lose some of our ability to adapt, It's like we are not working up to our body's full potential.
The better we adapt to our environment, the better we feel, function and deal with everyday life.
So how do we begin to lose this adaptation?
Interference to the one system designed to coordinate our adaptation.
Interference to our Nervous System!
Where does this interference come from?
First, our body must perceive what is going on around us and send that information up to the brain to be processed faster than any computer.
Then, the brain sends instructions down to the body to adapt to that perception.
ALL of that info is sent via the superhighway that connects them called the spinal cord which is housed in the, you guessed it, spinal column.
So, now we have all of this information being transported by all of these nerves coming into the spine, working perfectly UNTIL...
Until we have a structural shift in the spine. This shift can stretch or put pressure on the nerves we rely on to communicate these vitally important messages.
Nerve interference can reduce our adaptability over time leading to a slow fade of function within our body.
Loss of function isn't very noticeable until we lose enough of it for it to cause big problems -OR- until our body needs as much adaptation as we can get.
So now here is a question?
When the time comes for you to need the best adaptability possible, will you be functioning up to your potential?
Will you be living without interference?
If you want to find out what you can to to have the best function/coordination/organization/adaptability in your body possible, you need to find someone who focuses on the structure of the spine and the nerves that run through it.
Someone who knows how to RESTORE function and RESTORE adaptability.
Truth be told, your body is able to do all the work you need to live a great life.
All it takes, is making sure there is nothing in the way of adaptation!
Yours in Health,
That's right! It's resolution time!
How do I know?
I mean, aside from the new year beginning, of course.
Well, I share a wall at my office with a gym. And I sit right near that wall when it comes time to do paperwork. That huge mound on my desk that never gets smaller.
I hear two noises from the other side of that wall:
1.) A microwave.
(Seriously, when the food is done, take it out. Or else it just. keeps. beeping...)
2.) A telephone
And that telephone has been ringing off the hook these last few weeks with people getting ready to start down a road of these new resolutions.
To begin a new journey of health and fitness.
To be completely honest, I hope that these resolutions come to fruition and we all stand at the end of 2018 with our goals vanquished.
Join me back in reality, and I hope most can stick it out until we have warm weather again..
So let's talk about resolutions.
What are yours? Exercise. Eating better. Reconnecting with friends. Take a vacation.
I want to talk about one general resolution we could all use.
To be Healthy. Right? A pretty simple, yet exceptionally important goal.
But what does healthy mean?
Able to run a certain distance?
Absence of symptoms?
Little to no illnesses?
Those are all important, yet don't quite tell the whole story.
Health is so much more than just feeling. Health is about FUNCTION.
How your body functions is the true measure of what our health is.
How our body deals with stress on a regular basis is what allows us to live a symptom free life.
If our body is not functioning at 100%, we experience more illness, more pain, and, in general, more DYS-function.
But how do we know we are not at 100% when symptoms don't give us the answer?
In 50% of those who have heart disease, the first sign is a heart attack.
Often times, sciatica doesn't arise until years after nerve irritation.
We need to identify and address these hidden issues before they become BIG Issues.
Let's get to the resolution section:
Resolve to find out how you are functioning, not just feeling.
Structural Chiropractic is PROVEN to increase our bodies function, which in turn, improves feeling!
Structural Chiropractic is proven to improve:
Immunity = Less illesses
Posture = Less pain
Sleep = Wake up every day more refreshed
Pregnancy = Have a healthy 2018 baby!
The growth process = Give your kids the Chiropractic advantage
+ Healthy kids grow up to be Healthy adults!
Exercise = Nearly every professional sports team and the U.S. Olympic team incorporate Chiropractic into training because of the benefits.
And So Much More!
Make 2018 the healthiest year yet!
Make a resolution to increase function this year!
We'll be here to help!
Yours in Health,
I get asked often, "do you adjust babies?" Not kids, infants.
Tiny newborns. No muscle mass, floppy headed, all they do is cry, poop and sleep, little babies.
And the answer is, "let me tell you a story".
A story about one of the best moments of my life.
My wife and I were sitting in a movie theatre and as the lights went down she leans over and whispers, "I think I'm having a contraction".
And thus began the journey of welcoming our baby girl into the world.
Now, I know everyone knows that the birth process is traumatic for mom and baby, but watching it first hand I can truly say, IT IS TRAUMATIC FOR MOM AND BABY.
What do I mean by traumatic? I saw so much pressure placed on my daughters head and neck as she was being born. And to be honest, there was no way around it.
Simply put, it is just naturally a stressful process.
That is why, as soon as I could, I checked my daughter for a structural shift in her spine, less then an hour after she was born.
When I had found a shift of her atlas, (the top vertebrae in her neck) I adjusted her.
Quick sidebar: When I tell this story I often get a look of horror as people assume all chiropractic adjustments are the same.
No more pressure is used to adjust a baby then checking the ripeness of a tomato. So no, I didn't 'crack' her neck.
After the adjustment, my hands still on her, I watched as her arms and legs extended and relaxed and a huge sigh escaped from her lungs.
Favorite adjustment given. EVER.
And now, 1 month later, I can say we have a pretty good daughter.
Sure she cries, but she cries with definite purpose.
Sure she only sleeps 3-4 hours at a time, but she is a Month old.
She is a wonderful baby!
So now I ask you a question: Was your birth process traumatic?
Of course we all know the answer!
So how about another question:
Is it worth making sure your child develops and grows uninhibited?
I think you know the answer to that one as well
So make sure your kiddo gets checked, it's never too late to give your kids the best advantage possible!
So, Yes I do adjust babies!
Yours in health,
"Start with Why."
A great book by Simon Sinek about great companies starting with just that question.
So, I thought it about time to share my why to 2 of the most frequent questions I get asked:
Two great questions that I had to answer before even thinking about being able to help others!
So I'll answer each of them during this blog, each important.
So stick around for the whole thing for a look into what drives Restore Family Chiropractic!
Question 1: Why did I become a Chiropractor?
Short answer: I care about people getting better using a natural approach.
Long answer: I know my short answer is cliche. So I find it necessary to include more detail:
I have always had a strong desire to see people healthy. But I also had a desire to identify the underlying causes of issues instead of covering up symptoms. And I wanted to find ways to get to the root cause. And in my preparation for choosing a career, I found Chiropractic pop up a lot.
***Really Quick*** I am NOT saying there are NEVER moments when covering up a symptom is the wrong thing to do. To just function through the day, I get it. BUT it shouldn't be a long term solution, hence, correcting the underlying issues should be a priority!
Everywhere I looked for natural solutions for common ailments, Chiropractic was there. So I started my long journey towards becoming someone who could help.
And not just help, but educate and help people make great decisions regarding their overall health. Because, to be honest, Chiropractic can't cure everything, and if it isn't the best solution for you, I want to help you find what is.
Question 2: Why did you focus on one aspect
This one is due to a personal story.
But premise: If you don't know this about chiropractic - not each one of us is the same.
One more time for dramatic effect:
Not all chiropractors are the same!
Just as others can specialize and focus within their respective field, pediatrics, specific conditions, long term care, etc, chiropractors can as well!
So, back to my personal story -
I wanted to find a way to help people get rid of their health concerns for good, forever, completely.
During my search, early in school, I had someone very close to me, my wife, going through extremely bad hip pain.
Hip pain so back that by the end of the day, she would get home from work and cry out in pain.
And I couldn't do anything to help her. Talk about the worst feeling.
She went to her M.D., had x-rays, was told nothing there was nothing to diagnose and there wasn't much that could be done except to manage the pain. Not the best news.
So, we finally had a chance to try out my new profession and what it had to offer as I was just getting started in the program.
She started getting adjusted via Traditional Chiropractic:
If you have ever been adjusted, chances are you have been adjusted this way as well.
Adjustments to the spine to create temporary decreases in pain, muscle spasm and increases in range of motion.
They can be very beneficial for some, but for my wife she got minimally better and then it always came right back soon after her adjustments.
Enter Structural Chiropractic.
She was analyzed and was found to have NeuroSpinal Shift in her lower back, leading to her hip problems. (underlying cause leading to symptoms)
She then started to get adjusted via Structural Chiropractic:
Small adjustments to the spine over time resulting in a better foundation and reduction in NeuroSpinal Shift, resulting in reduction of the secondary conditions. (I.E. Hip pain.)
Then, one day, she came home and said she had NO ISSUES ALL DAY.
No more pain at night, when she woke up, at work, walking, sitting, ...
And it has been that way ever since! She has now even gone through pregnancy, without the common aches and pains thanks to Structural Chiropractic.
MY PATH WAS SET. I knew that this is what I wanted to do for people who had lost hope and have been told there were no remaining options.
Because that is where WE were.
She, tired of coming home only to be able to lay on the couch the rest of the night in pain.
Me, helpless to do anything for her.
I don't want ANYONE to be in that situation.
So, now you know WHY.
Finally, if you know of those who are in that situation, tell them about having more options. Structural Chiropractic SAVED our household, which is why I want to share it with others!
Yours in Health,
If there was a way to make your pregnancy better would you do it?
If there was research proving that something very simple would improve your chances of having a healthy baby, would you be more interested?
My wife and I are a mere 4 weeks (give or take) until our lives change forever!
Yep, just 4 weeks until our new baby girl arrives.
We (my wife) have been through quite a little these last few months.
For anyone who has been through this, I don't need to present the list.
For anyone who hasn't, it's long, though still worth it.
Now I could spend the entirety of this blog talking just how much my wife has been a champ through this whole thing, but I'll leave it at this-
She has been amazing, strong, and growing our child with a grace and glow I can only stand to smile at.
She, so far, has had a pregnancy many could only dream of.
(minus the kidney stones of course)
First trimester nausea was only ever that. Food always stayed down.
and this short little story.
'Our last OB appointment, our doctor was asking all of the standard appointment questions to make sure everything was ok. Then she asked, "how is your low back pain and your hip pain?" Katie: "I don't really have any"
Our OB was so surprised because at this point in the pregnancy, not being in pain is such a rarity!
So naturally I told her that Katie was seeing a fantastic chiropractor!'
Why is this?
Because she has a body functioning the way a body is supposed to during pregnancy.
Let me break it down for you. Because, if you, your wife, your sister, aunt, etc, wants a pregnancy the way your body was designed, I have a way to make that happen:
Pregnancy is a process in which a woman's body goes through an immense amount of changes and stress.
As stress is placed upon the body, a normal and stable foundation (your spine) starts to get lost.
An incorrect or unstable spine can put pressure on our nerves. The very nerves that connect our body and brain with information to keep us functioning the way we are supposed to.
We are much more prone to these issues during pregnancy.
To make sure we keep a stable foundation, we need to see someone who is an expert at keeping our spines well aligned, even in the midst of an increase in stress upon the body.
But please don't just take my word for it.
Research done in 2014 shows that simple adjustments to the spine can produce significantly improved pregnancy outcomes.
Research has proven that spinal adjustments improve pregnancy and health outcomes for both the mother and the baby.
It also shows that a much higher chance of the mother having a healthier, shorter and much more successful birthing process.
What would you say the most important asset in life would be?
What are the most important things in life to you?
I know many things can come to mind and there are so many different things we want to enjoy in life.
Having a family.
Buying a brand new sports car.
Going on Vacation.
There are so many things we can enjoy in life,
let me make a case for one more asset that is more important than any other.
There is no other asset more important than your health.
And here's why:
We can enjoy anything our hearts desire. We can drive our brand new car, take a well deserved vacation, play games with our kids/friends.
We can do and enjoy everything until...
Until we don't have our health.
When we live in the absence of health, we lose the ability to enjoy,
If our body starts showing secondary conditions (symptoms), like pain, it makes enjoying things much. more. difficult.
And on and on and on.....
What does this mean?
We HAVE to take care of this asset!!
We NEED to take care of the one thing we literally can't live without.
Well, I can't list everything here. But what I can do is talk about one of the topics I know a lot about.
Making sure we have a stable foundation.
If our spine, our foundation, is working the way it is supposed to, then secondary conditions won't rise up.
Simple as that.
So find someone that can provide the best care possible of your foundation.
Make sure to take care of your #1 asset!
Yours in Health,
I always get asked, "do you adjust kids?"
And my answer is always a resounding YES!
Well here are a few reasons:
So the next question is how do I know my child needs to be adjusted?
For this, we go all the way back to the beginning...
ANY mother can recount the traumas associated with the birthing process.
That is no secret.
But let's look at what studies show happens to the little one during this process as well.
One study looked at birth trauma occurrence in babies and found interesting stats:
So why is this important? Let's use an analogy:
When I was little I used to LOVE building towers with dominoes.
I know I'm not alone in this.
The goal of course was always to see how tall I could get the stacks before the tower fell.
I distinctively remember playing this little game on the floor at my great-grandmas house, because she had fluffy carpet. Now, fluffy carpet didn't make a great foundation for my towers, but being young and inexperienced, I tried anyways. They would never get too high until they crumbled. Then, I figured out what I needed was to create a firm foundation to start the bottom on. After that I could use up all of the dominoes in the box.
And it was awesome!
When we let our children grow up without addressing any of the trauma they had during the birthing process, learning how to walk, falling off of a bicycle, we let them grow up with a foundation built on carpet.
With a foundation of limited potential!
Why does that matter?
A compromised foundation leads to a compromised body.
Instead of a crumbling tower however, they are faced with secondary conditions of the body such as:
Now Earlier I mentioned kids respond really well to chiropractic and here is what I mean:
That is why at Restore, we have chosen to focus on RESTORING foundation all the way from the youngest of kids to the oldest of adults. Addressing the ROOT cause instead of the symptom.
As the founder of Chiropractic once said:
"There is a vast difference between treating effects and adjusting the cause."
- D.D. Palmer
Nothing feels as great as being able to use all of the dominoes in the box!
Yours in Health,
I have had plenty of conversations with people about stress.
And, they usually go like this...
Me: "The exams I do analyze how much stress we are dealing with and how our body deals with it."
Friendly Person "Haha, Well I think I would break your machine! I have too much for it to measure!"
(Almost) Every. Single. Time.
Which is why I am releasing a workshop on stress later this week.
I know, it's a joke. But I get a little worried sometimes because it is becoming an extremely common joke.
Our health, your health, is not supposed to be a joke.
I don't mind hearing that joke over and over.
What I do mind is getting the impression that nothing can be done about it.
Because that is not true.
Stress is a good thing, until too much of a good thing becomes a very, very bad thing.
Excessive stress keeps hormones like cortisol in our system for long periods of time. Here is an excerpt talking about what happens with excessive cortisol:
“Sustained high cortisol levels destroy healthy muscle and bone, slow down healing and normal cell regeneration, co-opt biochemicals needed to make other vital hormones, impair digestion, metabolism and mental function, interfere with healthy endocrine function; and weaken your immune system.”
Chronic stress can lead to serious issues. And this is only one example.
Which is why it is always a good idea to deal with it as soon as possible.
How to we find it?
How do we fix it?
How does it get better?
These are answers that will be found in our "Stressed" workshop.
So stay tuned as we roll out information that you shouldn't miss.
Yours in Health,
Yikes... It has been far too long since I have released a blog!
What a fast summer. School is starting soon and the humidity is thicker than soup. Anyways....
Since school is beginning in just a few short weeks, I thought I would do this one for the parents.
Stick with me if this is your morning.
'Time to wake up the kids for school/daycare/the day. First things first, check the pull-up. Find out they wet the bed. Add ten minutes to the morning routine, again.'
It seemed normal when they were younger but now they are going to school. Should this have happened for the nth time in a row?
You have gone the standard route already. Setting alarms, no drinks before bed etc, etc.
Nothing has changed.
What is there to do now except wait it out until they finally grow out of it?
First of all, let's talk about NORMAL. Bed-wetting is part of the development and growth of your child.
It is not uncommon for children to continue on with letting it all out during sleep up to the age of 5 or 6.
Why would it continue beyond that?
If you have read any of my other posts, you may know what is coming.
If you haven't, here is a quick synopsis:
Your child's body is dependent on function and adaptability to its environment.
It does this through the Nervous System.
Our Nervous System controls everything, even when we are sleeping.
Perceiving, Coordinating, keeping everything calm and stable by sending messages from the body to the brain and then from the brain to the body.
We run into issues when these messages becomes interfered with.
In a study looking at what happens to our nerve roots under stress, 6% stretch of our nerves led to a 70% decrease in the ability to create an action potential. (the signals our bodies use to communicate)
That means, when our kids are sleeping our brain is sending down a message to our bladder (and urinary system) to hold tight until morning. When that message doesn't get through, we see a wet pull-up or sheets in the morning.
The stretch I am talking about arises from what is called 'dyskinesia' in our spine or vertebrae. Dyskinesia is a loss of normal position and range of motion in a vertebrae resulting in physiological changes like inflammation which leads ultimately to stretch, pressure, and dysfunction within our nerves.
Leading to... You guessed it, bed-wetting.
So what can be done short of washing sheets each day and buying up the entire shelf of night time diapers?
See a chiro who focuses on two things:
Luckily you are already on the page of a Chiro that does both. (crazy enough)
Thus ends the science part
begins my last little soapbox section:
I attended a seminar a few weekends ago.
Here is a summery of something huge I learned:
As a Chiropractor, I have a very real solution to some big issues.
I am a very low pressure person and it flows into my business.
But what I am realizing, is that I have a moral obligation to share other options people may not have heard of before.
So, this is one of my moral obligatory posts.
My job is done.
Now you have a choice. You can take my words, do a little research on your own (which I suggest) and take action by setting up a time to find out more.
Think about this post the next time you are out getting a refill on your next set of pull-ups.
Either way, we'll be here, ready to serve.
Yours in Health,
We are now a week away from our NeuroStorm talk.
So, if you are with the many other folks who are intrigued but still don't know enough to come, allow me to take a chance and explain what exactly this workshop is designed for.
The NeuroStorm is a culmination of months worth of research on human physiology, case studies, and natural approaches for kiddos with Neurodevelopmental Disorders.
The two most common of the two being ADHD and Autism.
I'd like to dive into the above two disorders for a few lines so bear with me.
Over the last few years, there has been an unprecedented rise in both rates of Autism and ADHD.
Currently, 1 in 59 children born are found somewhere on the Autism spectrum and over 6.4 million kiddos live with the diagnosis of ADHD.
Kids have more stress put on their bodies than ever before.
Chemical Stress, Physical Stress, Emotional Stress.
From the foods we eat to learning how to walk.
Specific Examples? Come to the workshop.
This stress forces a child's body to respond by initiating their sympathetic nervous system also known as the "fight or flight" response. And while a little stress can be a good thing, a LOT of stress can be a VERY BAD THING.
Long term, high amounts of stress can lead to an excess of energy or a
shut down of many higher functioning systems like
communication and social skills.
One of the quotes you will see if you come to the workshop is:
"You can't be in protection and growth at the same time"
-Dr. Bruce Lipton
This extreme increase in diagnosis of ASD, ADHD, SPD, Tic disorders, etc.
is because kids are stuck trying to protect themselves from stress instead of growing and developing like they are supposed to!
So, how do we help? I won't do it alone. Which is why this workshop is designed not only to be educational, but to empower parents and kiddos so that the cycle stress can be broken and a new cycle of growing, learning, laughing, and playing can begin!
If this held your interest, there is still room to come and join us next Thursday.
There is still much to discuss. I hope to see you there!
